“PIECE OF REST” explores the dual meaning of the word Rest: the physical remnants of material and the human need for rest and stillness. Large-format tiles offer seamless, refined surfaces, yet their production inevitably generates a significant amount of leftover material, much of which is typically discarded as industrial waste. Through a collaboration between designer James Kaoru Bury and Cosentino, this project reimagines those fragments, transforming them into products and spatial compositions that speak not only of sustainability, but of care, value, and continuity. By shaping places of quiet reflection from materials that had seemingly completed their original role, the project proposes a renewed definition of material worth.
At the heart of the exhibition stands the water installation “SATSUKI,” conceived as a “washbasin made to be gazed upon.” Developed in close partnership with Spline Design Hub, a custom mechanical system was created to produce delicate ripples across the water’s surface, echoing the subtle movement of a lake. Here, reclaimed tile forms and flowing water converge, giving rise to an expression that moves beyond conventional recycling, where nature and technology meet in quiet harmony.
In “PIECE OF REST,” materials once treated as residual byproducts of production are repositioned as valuable resources. Through this transformation, the exhibition presents a forward-looking vision for sustainable building materials and spatial design, inviting the industry to reconsider not only how materials are used, but how they are perceived.
「休息 (Rest) 」と「端材 (Rest) 」の可能性を模索したプロジェクト。
大判タイルは継ぎ目のない美しい仕上がりを実現できる一方で、加工工程において多くの端材が生じ、その多くが産業廃棄物として処理されています。Cosentinoが扱う大判タイルも例外ではなく、原板から必要な部分を切り出したのちに、大きなサイズの端材であっても用途が見つからず廃棄されてしまうケースがあります。本展《PIECE OF REST》では、これらの廃棄予定端材のみを使用し、素材の再利用と循環の可能性を探る取り組みを行いました。
スペインの建材メーカー Cosentino は、大判タイル、クォーツストーン、独自技術による天然石加工など、建築分野において高度な素材開発を続けてきました。しかし、その生産工程で生じる端材は長らく十分に活用されてこなかった背景があります。本プロジェクトは、デザイナー James Kaoru Bury と Cosentino の協働により、これらの端材をプロダクトおよび空間デザインへ再構築し、新たな用途を提示する試みです。“役目を終えた断片（Rest）”から“休息（Rest）を生む場”をつくることで、素材の価値を再定義することを目的としています。
端材の加工は、岐阜県の株式会社クリエストンが担当。大判タイルならではの重量と硬度に対応するため、大型切削設備による精密カット、45度のトメ加工、職人の手作業による研磨仕上げなど、石材加工で培われた多様な技術が用いられています。一般的な建材加工では対応が難しい複雑な形状や微細な角度調整も、これらの技術によって実現しています。
本展の中心となる水盤「SATSUKI」は、「眺めるための洗面台」というコンセプトから生まれたインスタレーションです。湖面に生じる微細な波紋を表現するため、SPLINE DESIGN HUB と協働し、独自設計の機構を開発しました。タイル端材の造形と水の動きを組み合わせることで、素材の再利用にとどまらず、自然現象と技術が融合した新しい表現を実現しています。
「PIECE OF REST」では、生産工程の“余白”として扱われてきた端材を、新たな素材資源として位置づけ直しています。廃材の再活用を通じて、建材の循環可能性と空間デザインの新たな方向性を提示する展示となっています。
